Organic Supplements vs. Synthetic Supplements

So, physically or online, you’ve decided to browse a vitamin and supplement store. Now you’re overwhelmed with choices, and one of the most common questions to ask is, “Should I get organic supplements or synthetic supplements?”

That’s a great question to ask and shows a significant amount of awareness regarding your health. Taking any kind of supplement is a great step in complementing the vitamins and minerals your body absorbs through a balanced and nutritious diet. But, it’s worth doing due diligence when you’re looking into different supplements to use. Not all supplements are created equal or are held to a high-quality standard, which means you might think twice before putting them into your body.

Synthetic Supplements

Synthetic supplements, as the name suggests, are not derived from natural sources. Synthetic supplements are created in a lab environment. While synthetic supplements can closely mimic the structure of the natural vitamin or mineral, they can still contain chemicals that don’t occur in nature. 

Furthermore, the FDA does not review dietary supplements for safety and effectiveness before they are marketed. That means there may be higher or lower amounts of the isolated vitamin or mineral in a synthetic supplement, so its effectiveness may vary. And, in some cases, having an excessive concentration of a vitamin or mineral can actually be harmful to the body. 

Typically, synthetic supplements are cheaper and therefore more accessible. So they can be a source of vitamins and minerals that you may be missing from your diet as long as the manufacturer is, in fact, producing a quality supplement. 

Organic Supplements

Organic supplements, by and large, incorporate all of the benefits of a synthetic supplement while mitigating the negatives. Organic supplements, while also not reviewed by the FDA, can opt to meet rigorous inspection standards from the USDA simply to earn the “organic” designation.

Organic supplements, especially those that have the USDA certified organic designation, do not have harmful chemicals such as pesticides or insecticides. Since organic supplements are derived from natural sources, they more closely mimic the vitamin or mineral that would be consumed in a whole food source. 

While organic supplements may be more expensive than synthetic ones, it may be worth the cost to ensure that the supplements you are consuming are high-quality and do not contain chemicals that could do harm to your body.
